How to Backup your iPhone to iCloud

There are sevaral ways through which your iPhone data may be backed up. In this tutorial, I show to you, how to back up your iPhone data to Apple's cloud servers using iCloud.

But before I go into the illustrated tutorial from where I explain, the step by step guides of how to back up your iPhone's data using iCloud, allow me introduce you to the basics which is the iCloud itself.

1. What is iCloud?

   iCloud is a cloud storage solution and cloud computing service from Apple. A service that is designed primarily for use on all Apple devices by Apple devices' users.

   
   

   Through iCloud, Apple securely stores your photos, files, notes, passwords, and other data in the cloud and keeps it up to date across all your Apple devices, automatically. iCloud also makes it easy to share photos, files, notes, and more with friends and family.

   
   

   Out of the box, iCloud includes a free email account and 5 GB of free storage of data for each user. For pro-users who may want or need additional storage, you'll have to subscribe to iCloud+.

   
   

How to Backup your iPhone to iCloud

To backup your iPhone data to iCloud;

1. Open the Settings App on your iPhone

   The first thing you would need to do is to open your iPhone's settings application. You can access the settings application by clicking on the single-gear icon from your iPhone's App Drawer or from anywhere easiest to you. Just open the iPhone's Settings Apps.

   
   

2. Tap your Name

   The name should be the first option you'll see once the Settings application is opened.

   
   

   NOTE: this name may not reflect your real name but it ought to be the name that you or someone else had used when the iPhone was being setup in the first place.

   Once the name is seen, simply click or tap on the name.

   
   

3. Click or Tap iCloud

   The next page that opens after you may have tapped or clicked on Name would display a few options. Among the options you'll see iCloud. Just click or tap on it.

   
   

4. Click or Tap iCloud Backup

   Clicking or tapping the iCloud as seen from the previous step would take you to another screen that displays a few more options, among the options, locate iCloud Backup and then, tap or click on it.

   
   

5. Click or Tap to Toggle iCloud Backup On

   Now, the next page would display iCloud Backup with a button right in its front. Toggle the button to enable the iCloud Backup options.

   
   

   You'll know that iCloud Backup is turned on when the button turns green.

   
   

6. Finally, Tap Backup Now

   To begin backing up your iPhone data immediately, tap or click on Back Up Now option that appears immediately below the iCloud Backup option that was toggled "ON" in the previous step.

   
   

   NOTE:

   If you get a message that says the backup failed due to insufficient cloud storage, you can reduce the type of files your iPhone backs up by going back to the step 3 screen and then, uncheck some of the sliders or turn off some of the options. Then try backing up your iPhone again.

   
   

   Meanwhile, if after the adjustments you still experience some kind of errors or back up failures due to insufficient storage space, you might also consider going to Manage Storage > Backups and delete any old backups or remove certain types of files from your future backups. From here, you can also tap Change Storage Plan to upgrade your iCloud account to a paid plan.

   
   

   The paid plan is being referred to as iCloud+. With iCloud+, you can have up to 2TB of cloud-based storage.

   
   

Benefits of Using iCloud Backup

Since iCloud Backup is tied to iCloud which is Apple's cloud storage solutions and cloud computing service, the benefits of using iCloud Backup is the same as with other cloud services. Well, there are a few plus benefits to using iCloud backup.

• iCloud Backup allows you have access to your files and data on the go and on any devices. You can login to your iCloud account on phones, PCs or on any devices that can connect you to the internet and access your iCloud files from there.

• If iCloud Backup is turned "On" on any of your Apple devices, Apple automatically synchronizes the files and data on your Apple device across all other Apple devices on which your iCloud account is logged on and also has iCloud Backup turned "On".

• iCloud Backup allows seamless transfer and sharing of files across all your Apple devices.

• Using iCloud Backup also means, via iCloud, you can also easily share photos, files, notes, and more with friends and family.
